The seventh annual Livable Cities Forum is being hosted as a Pop-Up Event in the City of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Forum is a boutique national event widely known for its high-caliber sessions and diverse speakers on climate change action in Canada.
The 2018 Pop-Up is a chance for us to move the Forum around the country and offer a specific focus on getting started with managing climate risk. Combining plenaries, panel discussions, and workshops, this one day event will be a chance to discuss climate change adaptation and resilience with a focus on collaborative vulnerability and risk assessment, managing climate risks, and mainstreaming climate change across operations. As this year’s focus is managing climate risk locally, we warmly welcome the participation of municipalities, sustainability practitioners, provincial representatives, community service providers, emergency management professionals, businesses, and private sector agencies from across Canada.
Not only a hub for knowledge sharing and networking on local resilience, the Pop-Up Forum also represents a preliminary milestone of the Adaptation Changemakers project delivered by ICLEI and funded through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Climate Adaptation Partner Grants available through FCMs Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program (MCIP). MCIP, delivered by FCM and funded by the Government of Canada, is a five-year, $75-million program designed to support and encourage municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. The Adaptation Changemakers Project has brought together 8 communities from across the country to develop locally relevant climate change adaptation strategies. Join us in St. John’s to network with these participating communities and learn from them about their adaptation achievements thus far.
This year’s program will be delivered in a variety of unique formats including panel discussions, plenaries and several interactive and dynamic sessions.
- Kick-starting your community climate change adaptation and resilience initiatives.
- Managing local climate risks to social, natural, built, and economic systems within Canadian communities.
- Showcasing local leadership in resilience of local governments and practitioners from across Canada.
- Effectively communicating risks and opportunities associated with climate change to different types of stakeholders such as businesses, elected officials, and residents.
